Ariana wondered briefly if she would always feel this way from something as simple as a text from Lukas. Her insides flitted as she hesitated a few seconds before responding, swimming in the anticipation of the night.

7:49 p.m. Ariana: Meet you there.

Ariana picked up the red glass perfume bottle from her dresser and sprayed it on her wrists. With one last glance in the mirror, she ran downstairs and out her front door while yelling goodbye to her mom.

It was a clear, cloudless evening and her neighborhood was surprisingly quiet. Only a soft hum from restless bugs made any background noise. Ariana walked quickly, not wanting to waste a single moment she could be with Lukas. When she turned the bend of her street, she saw him leaning against his truck wearing a black tank top that showed off his tanned muscles. Ariana almost laughed out loud at the sight of him–he looked like a male model standing there, posed with one leg kicked back on the truck and sunglasses shading his eyes.

She slowed her walking, wanting to prolong the moment: this feeling of excitement, this feeling of being so alive. Ariana watched as Lukas’ mouth stretched into a sexy grin when he finally saw her. It was in moments like this that she wondered if all of this was really happening to her–how could her real life be better than her dreams?

Picking up her pace again, Ariana playfully bounded up to Lukas and stopped inches from his face, smiling. “Hey,” she said breathlessly.

Lukas’ grin disappeared, as if her sudden closeness had startled him. Desire flashed in his dark brown eyes. Lukas reached up and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, letting his hand linger there. “You catch me so off-guard sometimes,” he said. She thought she heard something almost defensive in his tone.

“I’ve missed you,” Ariana said honestly.

“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you.”

Ariana’s heart rate picked up at his response. There was something about the way he said the words, like there was much more meaning behind them than what he merely stated.

“But I see you even when I’m not with you,” Lukas continued.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re in everything I see and do,” Lukas said, trying to explain. “I was at the park the other day and I saw this beautiful red robin that kept toying with the dogs. She would land briefly, the dogs would run to where she was, sure they were going to catch her this time, but then the robin would gracefully take off again, leaving them all chasing after her. The way the robin flew reminded me of you.”

Ariana’s cheeks burned. Who said things like that?

“Then the robin came and landed on the bench next to me,” Lukas said quietly, his eyes on hers. “And she was so wild and beautiful.”

Ariana looked away, the intimacy of his comment overwhelming her for a moment. They were standing very close, and she was afraid that if she looked into his eyes much longer she would lose all self-control and finally kiss him.
